Possible to Create Doraemon’s Bamboo-Copter?

02 Oct

If you have ever watched Doraemon series, you will probably have encountered “Bamboo-copter”, the device that Doraemon puts on top of his head to fly. The video below (from Toribia no Izumi) explains the possibility of creating “Bamboo-copter”.

The video started out with the narrator explaining that the same question has been asked in Chiba University’s college entrance examination. The question which seems to be off-topic from school’s related courses was designed to evaluate the creativity of the examinee. In the end of the video, the professor who designed the question explains that there are 2 answers for the question:

1. It’s not possible to use a bamboo-copter to fly, because your lower body will end up turning the opposite direction for the bamboo-copter to be able to fly.

2. It’s possible if you put a small bamboo-copter in your feet to stop your body from rotating around (like a tail rotor of a helicopter).

Japan Says Chuitter

30 Sep

chuitter

A new service that clones Twitter has appeared in Japan. But, instead of 140 letters limitation, Chuitter only lets you to type 14 letters. At first, this limitation might sound ridiculous and impossible for the user to form an intelligible sentence in just 14 characters. However, considering the wealth of information one Japanese kanji letter can convey, this might not be a problem for Japanese users. It might even give a chance for the service users to push their creativity by writing short poem, such as haikus. Read the full story on Asiajin blog.

Wacky Space Experiments

17 Sep

Can you do push-ups in zero gravity? How about folding clothes? Or, can you ride a floating carpet like Aladdin?

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) published a series of video of its austronaut, Koichi Wakata, doing these experiments among several other wacky ones. The ideas for the experiment were collected from approximately 1600 people and they selected 16 best ones to be carried out on International Space Station (ISS). I came across these amusing videos a couple of months ago and I thought I would share them here. You can visit JAXA page for the full videos (Japanese), here.

Other experiments also include: arm-wrestling with a person in zero gravity, swimming through the air as if you were in water, putting eye drops into your eyes (do you have to lift your face up?). pinktentacle.com has put a nice video that compiles the highlights of the experiments which you can check out here:
